This tutorial demonstrates how to install a program (called a package in Linux) on your Raspberry Pi. Z shell is an extension of the Bash shell and is not included in Raspbian. Since it is not included it makes a good package to start with. Packages don’t have spaces in their names so a little research is in order. Google the name of the package, in our case “Z shell”, to find the name of the package. The name is “zsh”.
Let’s proceed with the installation…
First run the commands to make sure your Raspberry Pi is up to date.
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get upgrade
The first of the following screenshots demonstrates the search for updates and the request to install the updates. The second shows the result of answering “y” to that request.
Now to install Z shell…
$ sudo apt-get install zsh
Run Z shell…
Z shell opens in interactive mode and you can follow the prompts to exit or you can explore.
